What the heck happened to podcastersparadise.com and bovinefreepress.com?

Well here it is folks.

Throughout the summer I attempted various recording projects with mixed results except for two.

The first is that I was not happy with the "McGiver" like quality of my "recording studio". Which happily led directly to my new iMac and OS X.

Which led directly to the second result. A gutting of my basement and building of a proper recording studio with the desire to attain a controllable sound environment and electrical/electronic isolation..

And now, months later, I am almost there. All that needs to be done is to get the window and door in and we are back in business.

Speaking of business if you would like to see what else has kept me busy of late then please feel free to visit my business sites:

http://icommplus.ca and http://dancemachine.ca

I look forward to getting back to podcasting on a regular basis and expanding podcastersparadise.com as a showcase for new artists, content and talent.

Please check back soon. Until then why not listen to a back episode?

Thanks for visiting podcastersparadise.com!

RoB

podcasterparadise@gmail.com

The Grind Edition 018

Show Notes for Edition 018

We are back... finally!

It is time for a new edition of The Grind. Today I am joined by special guest Jonathan McKinnell from The Canadian Perspective podcast. We chat about a few things and most importantly listen to one of my newest LIVE recordings of Flook.

This is part two of set two recorded at Brockville, Ontario. I really like this theatre style matrix recording. Unfortunately there are about six seconds at the beginning of the set that are slightly distorted. Due to the live nature of the event I have conditioned but could not cut out this section. However, listen on with confidence.

Alright, the truth is I was listening to the recording of set one during the break and forgot to reset a few little bitty knobs to their recording positions, Arrrrg!. It was also quite a shock to the ears.

Although flawed this is probably my favorite "concert theatre" matrix type recording that I captured. It has some cool time signature changes that blend seemlessly together creating a unique synergy - says I.

Stayed tuned for more upcoming LIVE Flook sets in the future including a special acoustic only recording of the "Flook Unplugged" evening at The Georgian House in historic Alexandria.

Jonathan's choice for Web Site and Tech Tip of the Day:
mozilla.org
and their Firefox browser.

Until next time.

Letter from the Editor

Dear Listeners and Subscribers,

The Consistency Nazi (TCN) has kindly sent me a screen shot (see above graphic) of what he wants his iTunes playlist to look like when he downloads the show. My apologies.
Unfortunately, due to restrictions on how RSS works (or at least my understanding of how it works!) I cannot change the names of shows, particularly once "the dispersal" has begun. Most listeners do not want to receive my HUGE podcasts (see next point) again, at a lower quality, but with consistent ID3 tags.

Editor's note: Holy crap! I realized in hindsight, as I was working away, that I was assuming most applications reading enclosures will check against the MP3 names listed. If they also check against the ID3 tags themselves to decide wether or not do download them then I am in for a lot of flames. However (TCN) will be happy!

It makes me wish that I had a huge MEGA sponsor like Apple who wanted to support the little podcasters out here and immerse us in Apple technology so that these things really mattered, which of course they do, but I didn't think about them at the beginning. The learning curve of life as a podcaster can be steep.

So that (TCN) can sleep at night I have remade all the ID3 tags in the current back catalogue so that any new subscribers getting the old shows will have a spiffy playlist in iTunes. All new shows will carry the new ID3 tag format that I have used for about the last 4 shows.

Which brings up show sizes, sample rates and RSS feeds. All shows are now being sampled at 128 KPS. All shows in the back catalogue have been resampled to 128 KPS. This makes the shows about one third the original file size. I first tried 96 KPS but there was an ugly swooshing sound to the podcast. 128 KPS seems to be acceptable and not too big.

This should speed up downloads and also let new subscribers getting the olds shows not slow things down as much, which brings up RSS feeds.

I am looking at soon making two categories of RSS feeds a "PREMIERE EDITION" category and a "BACK EDITIONS" feed. I just have not figured out how to do it yet so that I don't waste subscribers bandwidth with a second download. I am open to suggestions and working on it. I am also looking for a solution to giving "priority" to downloads of the PREMIERE edition.

Thanks.

The Grind, Edition 007
Today I am joined by my first guest host Little G McLeod. Quite possibly the World's Youngest Podcaster. (Anyone know?)
For the second show in a row I neglected to mention who the heck I am. Oops. Hi I am your host Rob McLeod. Thats that now!

Edition 007 Show Notes
Wow what a great show! I really had a good time making it too. At least until Audacity started stuttering around 30 minutes into the show, arrrg. I ended up having to do some fancy footwork and digitial stiching to polish it off.

Todays featured artists are:

The Daily Grind 006 ARCHIVED OFFLINE

Edition 006 of The Daily Grind takes us on a visit to Fading Ways Records. Check out the FWR mission statement.

Listen to tracks from artists with material included in the FWR "Share" volumes of redistributable sample tracks.

We are joined for the first time by our new OHL/Ottawa 67's Roaming Correspondent Paul Nadon.

I managed to squeeze in a few websites but ended up skipping the Tech Tip of the Day due to time restrictions.

However, here is the podcasters Tip of the Day. Do not, Repeat, DO NOT lose your script halfway through a two day edit. You will end up sounding a wee bit silly as you announce things you later forget to do. Sort of like me!
For example. Oh yes ladies and gentlemen I'm your host Rob McLeod. Ya know, simple stuff.

Moving on. I announced in today's show my intention to change the name of the podcast to The Grind out of respect for a lad who infrequently podcasts out of the U.S. as The Daily Grind Coffee. His podcast started several months before mine. So as to avoid confusion between the two shows I am renaming my show The Grind (also freeing me up from my "calling the show 'Daily' but not airing it daily" guilt all in one fell swoop.Yaaa!)

Featured artists today are:

Red Orkestra

John Griffiths

Neil Leyton (O.K. Neil isn't "featured" but is involved in most of the music presented today.)

thee motion (Oops! I think I said The Emotion in the show)

Jim Clements

Related Links
Neil Leyton is the subject of a recent interview about Creative Commons and Copyright Act changes in Canada available at creativecommons.org

You can look forward to an interview with Neil Leyton and discussion about the Creative Commons, Copyleft and proposed chages to the Copyright Act in an upcoming edition of The Grind that will also feature more FWR releases.

Until next time.

ARRRG!

I can't bring myself to archive this show offline yet.
Featured artists today are Irish and UK sensation: Flook

This instrumental group is incredible. A reel sonic treat. Join me as we find out more about the band.

Although I found some great pics of the band in concert I would encourage you to visit their website, buy some CD's perhaps and check out their roadtour pics so I don't have to rip off someones' great photos without permission. (though I'm working on it! Permission that is not stealing them.)

I want to send a great big thank you to "Doc" Johnson from celticcultures.com.

Finally a show with production levels I can live with. Surely the best sound quality yet of all the shows - and the quality of all future shows lets hope!.
To all of those people that got the first edition of #005 with the freaky audio, my apologies I didn't listen to the whole thing through after conversion and the multiple sample rates weirded out in Audacity.

I've got the whole studio well setup now and can start to crank out some more shows with much higher production value.

A Note from the Basement Studio of bovinfreepress.com

Just a note from the basement studios of the bovinefreepress.com to let you know that I have not gone off the air. Instead I have had a few technical problems that include the terminal expiration of my OS. Fun times last night doing a systems rebuild and restoring my backups. Now I'm really thankful for that external HD.

On a more positive note many of my old technical problems are resolved and I have several shows circling the outer markers like flights ready for landing.

Anyone who got a copy of show #005 - well if your copy works .. congratulations. For those of you suffering through the learning curve with me my aplogies I have now resolved the bug in Audacity using multiple sample rates. I hope.
Edition Five is in the presses now.

In a strange way its good to do a somputer system rebuild as it lets you clean everything up in a Spring Cleanupish sorta way. Unfortunately, my Mixcast Live is still a no go. Bummer.

More editions hot off the presses soon.

The Daily Grind 004 ARCHIVED OFFLINE

Its time for edition #004 of "The Daily Grind" series. Today I am joined in studio by singer/songwriter John Griffiths.

WoW! What a whopping big picture of John.

After he left I realized that I had forgotten to take John's picture so I went and dug up this oldy from the TM Gang archives from new Year's Eve at Wall's house several years ago and cropped him out (with Wall's coffee cup full of red wine!)

Hold on to your hats people.
I believe that John's acoustic piece could be a great little intro/extro piece for the show.

The Daily Grind 001B <b>ARCHIVED OFFLINE</b>

This edition has been taken offline in advance of the release of the remix.

I will include the interview with Ellen Hamilton about their upcoming trip to Iqaluit in the remixed release.

Recent technological advances advances, ok I broke down and dropped the cash needed for equipment appropriate to the task, and computer catastrophies have allowed me to be able to substantially recondition the original recording.

Editor's Geek Note:
I shot this for video test purposes and only later tried to use the audio here. I had after all never even heard of podcasting!
The original is actually the soundtrack from the condenser microphone on my digital video camera. This means you can actually hear the motor of the camera whirring around during quiet moments and a viscious high end.

Well yahoo! Another show is in the can. This one is huge-ish at around 97 MB and about an hour and forty five minutes long.
Show notes for this one are easy.
Night Sun.
There that about covers it.
Levels are still the hardest part of producing the show, though with the new mixer its getting much easier. Of course, feel like going back and reposting 1_A.
EDITOR'S NOTE: this post will soon be replave by a remastered version of the orginal recordings. Recent improvements here at bovinefreepress.com have allowed me to substantially improve the sound quality. In addition , I will add an interview with Ellen Hamilton from Night Sun.
When I first shot the video of this "Road Trip Show" I really did not envision using it this way. Actually I had never even heard of podcasting yet. Sometimes you just have to go with what you have.

This show also features the first telephone interview with The Daily Grind's International Weather Bureau Chief, Barry Wallace.

As always your feedback is appreciated.

This remixed edition is now online.

Recent technological advances advances, ok I broke down and dropped the cash needed for equipment appropriate to the task, and computer catastrophies have allowed me to be able to substantially recondition the original recording.
